Emil Salto
Emil Salto is a Danish artist working primarily in painting and drawing. Salto investigates the act of painting as a means of bringing hidden matter to light. His work is informed by an understanding of the medium as an active participant: not a surface onto which ideas are applied, but a field of call and response.
His paintings begin with frottage drawings taken from everyday objects and surfaces, including his own work clothes, establishing a bodily ground for the image. Drawn forward through repeated cycles of layering, painting, and washing down, residues of earlier stage remain visible, guiding each subsequent decision. The result is a painterly space suspended between abstraction and perceived figuration. Reflecting on themes of transformation and hidden matter, the paintings treat the canvas as a compressed field of time, where sediment, erosion, and porosity describe psychological conditions as much as painterly ones.
In recent years his practice has moved toward autobiographical territory, circulating personal material, childhood experience, intimate life, unconscious residue, through a process that surfaces latent content. The work draws on memory and shared visual consciousness across lived lives and art-historical references. Each painting is a manifestation: a way of understanding the world where past and present occupy the same surface. Everything is already here. The work makes it visible.
Emil Salto (b. 1968) lives and works in Copenhagen. He graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2000. He has held institutional solo exhibitions nationally and internationally, and realized large-scale site-specific works for public spaces. Salto is represented in the collections of the Danish Arts Foundation and the City of Copenhagen.
