Emil Salto
Emil Salto works with painting, photography, and film, exploring materiality and sensory impressions through geometric shapes, light and vibrating colors. From the ’00s to the late ’10s, Salto focused particularly on photograms: images made without the use of a camera, illuminating photosensitive paper. In recent years, Salto has turned to painting, which has now become his primary medium.
Emil Salto’s paintings are based on frottagé drawings of clothes, creating a bodily base for the painting. The paintings are painted and then washed down several times, inspired by Salto’s early childhood memories of making sense of the world thru picture making with the Waldorf School’s wet-on-wet painting. The result is dreamlike paintings pending between abstraction and figuration. Although the works may appear fragmented in their expression, your eyes invariably look for recognizable shapes. Faces and bodies appear in the paintings, quivering in Salto’s dynamic strokes.
Emil Salto has exhibited internationally and made large-scale site specific works for public spaces. He has held institutional solo shows both nationally and internationally. Salto is represented in the collections of the Danish Art Foundation / Statens Kunstfond and The City of Copenhagen / Københavns Billedkunstudvalg.
