As in Holes
A solo exhibition with Nanna Starck
Through her powerful use of powdered pastel colors and everyday materials, Starck invites us to confront the repulsive and taboo within her artworks. One of the highlights of the exhibition is the monumental 180 cm x 336 cm five-part relief titled “I Put a Peephole in My Flesh”. Within this striking piece, naked and partially headless bodies intertwine, each scene captivatingly detailed. Shiny glossy drain filters punctuate the matt concrete background, serving as the eyes of one figure and even replacing the face in another, filled with cigarette butts and flesh-like greenish worms. It’s a visceral experience that oscillates between discomfort and fascination.
In her choice of relief lies a desire to re-actualise a medium that has been used for storytelling and depicting complex emotions in an art historical context dating back to antiquity. The tactile nature of the relief beckons viewers to engage physically and emotionally, prompting reactions ranging from disgust to laughter, but never leaving anyone indifferent.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a text by Helle Fagralid.
